Surf & Water Photography

Surf photography has been a big part of my life as a photographer for more than 25 years.

From the earlier days shooting for surf magazines and editorial features through to commercial work and personal projects, photographing in and around the ocean has always been one of the foundations of ST Images.

This gallery brings together surf and water photography shot from the beach, the air and, most importantly, from within the water using professional water housings.

More than just photographing waves

A lot of the images in this gallery have come from simply chasing good light, interesting waves and those little moments around surfing that make me want to pick up a camera.

Spending so many years swimming with a camera has also shaped the way I approach photography more broadly. Working in and around the ocean teaches you to anticipate moments, work quickly with natural light and deal with environments where you don't have much control. Those skills now carry across into the outdoor, tourism and lifestyle photography I shoot for clients around Australia.

Surf photography also became the foundation of my photography teaching. Over the years I've helped photographers understand water housings, camera technique, composition, working safely in the ocean and the creative side of shooting surf and water photography.

These days I work with photographers through private 1-on-1 mentorships rather than online courses. The mentoring is tailored around the photographer, whether that's improving their water photography, becoming more confident with their camera, developing their style or working towards photography professionally.
